LXIV. Upgrading Żuk fuseboxes from bosch/torpedo to blade type

My Żuk A06 got two fuseboxes of 10 fuses each. Note that 3+4, 5+6, 7+8 and 9+10 are linked by design and that A to L have two contacts.

Fusebox 23 is quite empty, you might say (and it is really a 10 fuses box, not 7).

So what is there to upgrade here? Well, these are torpedo/Bosch type fuses. Not only there are no longer very common (sure, you can find them if need be, but not in the glove compartment of another car on the parking lot) and they are often subject to contact issues. So we’ll do like Grzmiący Rydwan: UNI fuse boxes and resettable blade fuses.

The resettable feature makes the blade fuses more expensive and too high to close the default fuseboxes; I’ll decide later if it was worth it.

Obviously, in order to replace the fuseboxes, we need to add custom support plates and bridges (3+4, 5+6, 7+8 and 9+10) to mimic the design of the original fuseboxes. For now, I decided not to alter the original wire but to add extra wires/contacts as bridges. I do not think contacts in this place (inside the dashboard) should be much of a problem. Worse case scenario, if it does, I’ll alter the originals wires to limit the number of contacts.

It is also a good occasion to check all the wires according to the diagram:

  • A”: 25A for the rear fog light, instead of 8A in the manual;
  • A: only 2 red wire, the 3rd is for non available compartment heating;
  • B: the green wire is attached to a white, so there are 4 fours cables;
  • E: grey red wire instead of yellow black (but checked, correct);
  • I: red is actually light pink;
  • H: 4 wires (2x grey black, chesnut, black) instead of 3;

While doing that, it is a good time to reconnect the three connectors from the commands attached to the steering wheel/column and similar connectors, for instance the “stop” contact:

The plan is to install only two UNI 8 fuseboxes (a single 16 fusebox would imply having all the wires in the same tight spot) :

We keep places/names consistent with the original layout – the length of wires prevent us to do as we please (hence the first box to the right and the second to the left, in reverse order). We use 15A instead of 16A because that is what is readily available as blade fuse. We also use a 8A fuse for the rear fog light, how it was supposed to be. We also anticipate and add the 10A P-14 fuse for the front fog lights. And we still have two free fuses spots.
